Artist Statement
Maxine Bell is a second-year Dual Degree Student at SMFA with currently exploring lithography. Her work is a lot about having fun with the subject, exploring personal artifacts, and creating for herself. Bell studies American Studies with a focus on Asian American Studies where she has reclaimed erased histories of Asian America and is, for the first time in her life, incredibly proud and an unapologetic Mixed Race Asian American. This pride shows through her work as she is no longer bending under pressure to create political works about her identity, but makes art to express for herself and people like her rather than for the common audience. Bell's works are celebrations of the self.
