Artist Statement
Michael Barsanti Fatal Fetish, 2018 Artists Statement Guns are at the heart of what makes angry people so dangerous. The fetishization and easy availability of firearms in the United States sets us apart from most other countries. Gun ownership is not necessarily a problem, but rather the reluctance and rejection of any sort of management of ownership or limits of firepower. The NRA dominates this resistance. It uses its political and financial power to conflate liberty with guns. Their new push is to attract more women (their most vocal detractors) into their fold in order to bolster their narrative of, ‘if everyone had guns there would be no crime’. As Betsy Devos is poised to weaponize schools and teachers, the gun death toll mounts and gun sales continue to rise. The promotion of pink gripped AR-15s and “Hello Kitty” adornments suggest to me that gun marketing has no limits and the murder and suffering of the innocent is the price we are all paying.
