Artist Statement
In today’s political climate, rhetoric, and policies against immigrant communities have caused many individuals to stand in opposition to bills and executive orders that directly impact their lives in this country. As a son to immigrant parents, my response has been to capture portraits of immigrant street vendors for the purpose of depicting a culture and community that risk their lives to provide an invaluable service to suburban neighborhoods and families. Los Vendedores, is a series where I search the city for these entrepreneurs to showcase the spirit of this determined workforce. These street vendors demonstrate a willingness for financial stability in exchange for goods and services they provide as well as preserving their cultural representation, which often occurs through food. It is my belief that street vendors embody Hispanic traditions with American values by integrating their own culture with a common business model to pursue their own American dream.
