Artist Statement
This work is born out of an ongoing collaboration between myself and my husband. Having met whilst graduate students at SMFA, we have maintained distinctly separate painting practices over the past 15 years. Approaching a collaboration in an egalitarian way has been a negotiation for us, from the nature of the imagery to the mark making to the surface itself. We decided to abandon all systems and comforts of our own practices in order to make work with a new language. For us, this naturally led to abstraction. The mark making is variously embroidered lines, airbrushed planes, and the tension between gessoed surface and raw canvas. Inspired by the pre-literate scribbles of our young children, we are fascinated by the design, composition, and color of their drawings. The work reflects a reverence for this in the meticulous hand stitched and delicately airbrushed surface. What took them perhaps 3 minutes to draw can take over 3 months to create.
